When Wonder Legends Studio approached us with their ambitious vision of blending Greek mythology with steampunk innovation, we knew this wasn't just another VFX project—it was a chance to help birth an entirely new universe. Their "Myths and Steam" world needed visual effects that would convince publishers to invest in a transmedia revolution, transforming ancient legends into a breathing, mechanical mythology that players could truly inhabit.
The Challenge
[BEFORE IMAGE - Early concept art vs. initial prototype footage showing basic environmental staging]
Wonder Legends faced the ultimate developer's dilemma: they had secured $1M in pre-seed funding and industry heavyweight Christophe Erbes (former Disney XD, Nickelodeon head) as a collaborator, but they needed a show-stopping vertical slice to secure their next major funding round. The challenge wasn't just technical—it was existential. How do you make investors believe in a world where teenage engineer Icarus soars through the underworld of Hades on steam-powered wings, seeking the ichor of capricious gods to awaken the great automaton Talos?
The technical hurdles were equally daunting: creating VFX that would seamlessly bridge their game and animated series production, all within Unreal Engine 5, while maintaining performance optimization for their target release window of 2027-2028. Every particle, every shader, every environmental effect needed to serve both interactive gameplay and cinematic storytelling.
Our Approach
[PROCESS IMAGES - Development progression showing particle system creation, mythological environment effects, and steam-mechanical hybrid elements]
We embraced Wonder Legends' transmedia vision by developing a unified VFX language that could speak to both gamers and animation audiences. Our team dove deep into Greek mythology, studying everything from the ethereal glow of divine ichor to the mechanical precision of Hephaestus's forge, then reimagined these elements through a steampunk lens.
The breakthrough came when we realized that steam itself could become our narrative bridge—every puff of vapor, every mechanical spark, every mystical glow needed to tell the story of a world where ancient magic and industrial innovation had collided. We developed custom shader systems that could make bronze automatons feel alive, created particle effects that made divine blood pulse with otherworldly energy, and crafted environmental atmospherics that transformed mythological realms into believable, explorable spaces.
Our collaboration with Wonder Legends became a true partnership of vision—their deep understanding of transmedia storytelling combined with our technical VFX expertise to create something neither team could have achieved alone.
The Solution
[MULTIPLE RESULT IMAGES - Icarus in flight with steam-powered wings, Talos automaton awakening sequence, underworld of Hades with mystical steam effects, divine ichor particle systems]
The final VFX package transformed Wonder Legends' vertical slice into a publisher-ready showcase that perfectly captured their "Myths and Steam" universe. We delivered a comprehensive suite of effects including:
Divine Ichor Systems: Luminescent particle effects that made godly blood feel both mystical and mechanical
Steam-Powered Flight Mechanics: Dynamic wing effects that combined mythological grandeur with industrial precision
Mythological Environment Atmospherics: Underworld fog systems, divine realm lighting, and mechanical temple ambiances
Automaton Awakening Sequences: Complex shader work bringing ancient bronze warriors to life
Transmedia-Ready Assets: Effects optimized for both real-time gameplay and linear animation rendering
Every effect was performance-optimized for their Unreal Engine 5 pipeline while maintaining the visual fidelity needed to impress both publishers and future audiences.
Impact & Results
[COMPARISON SLIDER - Before/after showing transformation from basic prototype to cinematic-quality vertical slice]
The VFX transformation helped Wonder Legends present a vertical slice that truly captured their transmedia ambitions. The enhanced visual presentation supported their pitch for the next funding round, demonstrating that their "Myths and Steam" universe could deliver both gameplay engagement and cinematic spectacle.
The effects we created became the foundation for their continued development, providing a visual benchmark that aligned their game and animated series production. Most importantly, we helped prove that their innovative transmedia approach—developing both products simultaneously—could deliver cohesive, compelling results.

"Studios Ground Zero didn't just create visual effects for our vertical slice—they helped us realize the visual language of our entire 'Myths and Steam' universe. Their understanding of both our transmedia vision and the technical demands of Unreal Engine 5 production was exactly what we needed to prepare for our next funding phase. The VFX they delivered became the foundation that convinced industry veterans like Christophe Erbes that our vision could become reality."
